Emmy Rossum - Sentimental Journey

I have eclectic taste in music; I always have. I'm pretty open to listening to something different, and my favorites include artists from a wide variety of genres. When I was given the opportunity to review Emmy Rossum's new album Sentimental Journey, released on January 29, I really wasn't sure what to expect. So I was listening with fresh, unbiased ears, which is a nice way to experience a new album. And I was pleasantly surprised. The album has a melodious, mellow, old-fashioned sound to it. For me, it brings to mind Billie Holiday, whom I love and listen to if I'm really in the mood to relax and unwind.

Sentimental Journey is a collection of 12 cover songs, each one corresponding to a month of the year. The title track (for the month of January) had me waxing nostalgic, considering it was a song that my middle school choir covered over 20 years ago. We sang many other old classics in that class as well, and listening to this album reminded me of that time of my life. Most of these songs were new to me, but I enjoyed Emmy's renditions and am now curious to hear the original versions!

Here's a list of the tracks, in calendar order:

1 (January) "Sentimental Journey"
2 (February) "The Object of my Affection"
3 (March) "I'm Looking Over a Four Leaf Clover"
4 (April) "These Foolish Things (Remind Me of You)"
5 (May) "(I'll Be With You) In Apple Blossom Time"
6 (June) "Summer Wind"
7 (July) "Many Tears Ago"
8 (August) "All I Do is Dream of You"
9 (September) "Nobody Knows You When You're Down and Out"
10 (October) "Autumn Leaves"
11 (November) "Things"
12 (December) "Pretty Paper"

As you can see, many of the songs have obvious connections to the months they represent, but others you have to really listen to in order to understand why they were chosen.

I'm glad to have this CD to add to my collection. It's now available on Amazon and iTunes. Listen...and enjoy!

Emmy Rossum looks and sounds like she's from another era.
