Book Review: Jade and the Tooth Fairy by Jacinta Zechariah
Lucy has been obsessed with fairies lately. She is so absolutely certain she is going to lure one into her bedroom and convince her to stay and live with us forever. Her bait is fairy food (Cheerios), hand drawn pictures of fairies, and little blankets made out of paper. She has a wiggly tooth and is confident that once the tooth comes out, her wished-for fairy friend is a sure thing. Hence, Jade and the Tooth Fairy by Jacinta Zechariah was a timely bedtime story this week.
In this charmingly illustrated children's book, a little girl named Jade is anxious to meet the tooth fairy and visit fairy land. The prose is poetic and sweet, and Mathilda and Lucy both liked the story. Although the book is about 30 pages cover to cover, there are not many words and it takes only a few minutes to read, making it a perfect bedtime story.
Although the story was cute, what really struck me were the whimsical illustrations. They are quite lovely and a little bit vintage looking, reminding me of another era. The details, bits of sparkle, and old-fashioned qualities set them apart from other children's books illustrations. I read an e-version of the book, and I bet the pictures are even more beautiful to see in a real paper book. Jade and the Tooth Fairy would make a cute little tooth fairy gift, left in lieu of money for a little girl who has just lost a tooth.
I received a complimentary ebook version of this book for review purposes. All opinions are my own.
