Visit New Jersey

Visiting every state in the country is a long term goal of mine. I have a lot of work to do to fulfill that dream! One state that I've never been to is New Jersey. It is relatively close to Michigan, so hopefully we can make it there in the near future. Every state has its gems, and of course New Jersey is no different. The Central New Jersey area, in particular, has tons of attractions that look like fun.

Since 99% of any travel I do involves my kids, I'm particularly interested in family activities. There are many obvious choices for kids, including:
  • Six Flags amusement park in Jackson, complete with a humongous drive thru zoo (separate admission)
  • iPlay America in Freehold; an indoor amusement park with rides, games, laser tag, go karts, and more
There are also several historical attractions in Central New Jersey, including historical homes and Revolutionary War sites, like Old Colonial Cemetery and Rockingham, which served as George Washington's final headquarters during the war. Plus there are art museums, such as the Jane Voorhees Zimmerli Art Museum, galleries, theaters, and observatories.

While my kids are pretty good sports about being cultured with historical sites and art museums, getting them outside to enjoy the great outdoors helps to prevent them from being overwhelmed and crabby. Whether it's stopping at a playground, or taking a walk and enjoying the natural scenery, spending time outside is important when we travel. Again, there are plenty of such opportunities in Central New Jersey. The Middlesex County Parks and Recreation department boasts a plethora of parks with space for picnicking, playing, and walking and hiking trails.

I think there would be plenty to keep our family busy in New Jersey. Have you been to New Jersey? What are your favorite family activities and attractions?
