Sandusky Fun + Spring Break Family Fun Giveaway Winner Announcement

First order of business: The Spring Break Family Fun Giveaway officially ended Sunday. There were a lot of entries and I'd like to personally thank every single person who took the time to enter, share, tweet, etc.  This was a fun giveaway to offer, and I look forward to offering more awesome giveaways in the future!

Congratulations to Jeffrey Lammers! I will be in touch with you shortly so you can receive your prize package as soon as possible! Thank you so much for your participation!

Side note: Two other giveaways also ended Sunday, and those winners will be notified shortly too! Congratulations to Marissa M., Michele P., and Jessica, the winners of the Borax giveaway; and Nicole B., the winner of the Purex Crystals for Baby giveaway!

Now, moving on...since the giveaway prize pack is all about Sandusky, Ohio, I thought it would be fun to share some more about what the area has to offer. I'm willing to bet most people don't realize how much potential there is for family fun in the Sandusky area, and for us Metro Detroiters, it's only about a two hour drive: far enough from home to feel like a real vacation, yet close enough to do in a weekend and to not break the bank with gas costs. If you're looking for Spring Break plans, this could be your solution!

Water Park Hotels
Sandusky is known for its water park hotels, which can be visited and enjoyed year round because the fun is indoors. This is not necessarily a complete list:

Maui Sands Resort (recently reopened!)

Museums & History
I had no idea that the Sandusky area was so rich with history and full of unique museums.

Edison Birthplace - as in the Thomas Edison. I am such a dork, I find it to be fascinating that Edison was born just one state away from my home state.
Maritime Museum of Sandusky
Milan Museum
Merry-Go-Round Museum*
Eleutheros Cooke House - FREE admission
Follett House Museum - FREE admission
Historic Lyme Village
Johnson's Island Confederate Officers Prison Cemetary
Liberty Aviation Museum/Tri-Motor Heritage Museum
Mad River & NKP Railroad Museum - open Memorial Day through Labor Day
Rutherford B. Hayes Presidential Center

Family Fun
If your kids are not going to tolerate an entire vacation full of interesting historical tidbits, you might want to appease them with some kid-friendly attractions.

African Safari Wildlife Park - one of my favorite places that I've been with my kids. So.Much.Fun.
Cedar Lanes Entertainment Complex - located at the Quality Inn & Suites resort in Sandusky, offering bowling, laser tag, and more
Cedar Point - open seasonally, see web site for details
Ghostly Manor Thrill Center
Goofy Golf - open May through October
Island Adventures Family Fun Center - open Memorial Day through Labor Day, mini-golf, go karts, & more

Miscellaneous
Being on Lake Erie, water activities are naturally plentiful, including: fishing, fishing charters, watercraft rentals, and, if you have your own boat, launch ramps. In the warmer weather, you may want to hit up a local beach.

If you're looking for activities that are more grown-up oriented and not necessarily kid-friendly, there are several golf courses and wineries in the area.

Ferry rides provide visitors passageway to Put-in-Bay/South Bass Island, Kelleys Island, and Middle Bass Island, hot spots for summer fun.

Marblehead Lighthouse State Park - home to the oldest continually operating lighthouse on the Great Lakes
Schedel Arboretum & Gardens - Open April through October
Seneca Caverns - Memorial Day  through Labor Day
Sidney Frohman Planetarium

Since 2013 marks the two hundredth anniversary of the Battle of Lake Erie, this summer there will be several special events during the Lake Erie Bicentennial Celebration. For a schedule of events, see www.BattleofLakeErie-Bicentennial.com.

Whew! I can't believe I live so close, and have even been to Sandusky several times, and never knew that the area has so much to offer! This post really doesn't even begin to scratch the surface, either! For more information, be sure to visit shoresandislands.com.

*M3 family passes are available for purchase for $45, and include family admission to 3 museums: Maritime Museum of Sandusky, Milan Museum, and the Merry-Go-Round Museum. This would be a savings of approximately $7 for a family of four.
