Toys That Have Lasted Through Four Kids

My kids have gone through a lot of toys over the years. I mean a lot of toys. The sad fact is that many, many, many of them wind up being worthless junk, or they're just not interesting enough to endure the test of time. But there are some that are real keepers, and that still get played with years later. If you have little kids and are just starting your family, and you're wondering what you can get the munchkins for Christmas, you can get a lot of miles out these favorites.

  1. Little People  These things are the best. Most of ours are in the basement, so they don't get played with daily, but they are still beloved by all of my children. Yes, even the 10 year old tween diva will still play Little People.
  2. Magna Doodle  We have a few incarnations of this floating around the house, in various sizes and styles. They all get a lot of use, but I think the big one with the different shape magnets is probably the favorite. We've had that one for 7 or 8 years and it is still in the middle of my family room floor as I sit and type this.
  3. Wood Blocks  We have a couple sets of colorful wood blocks that came in wooden trays that slide right under the couch. I love them because they encourage creativity and they engage the kids for long periods of time. My mom bought them for Bethany and Connor for Christmas several years ago, and they still get pulled out at least a couple times a week.
  4. Drum Full of Instruments  We got Bethany this drum for her third birthday. It's clear plastic, the top comes off and it's full of other little instruments. All kids love this toy. Seven years later and it's still going strong as a favorite around here. I couldn't find a link on Amazon to the exact one we have, but if you click on link you'll have an idea of what I'm talking about.
  5. Step2 Push Around Buggy  Bethany got this for her 1st birthday. Three of our kids have gone trick or treating in it, and they've all gone for countless neighborhood walks. There's a steering wheel and a beeping horn and a compartment to put things in. The handle lets parents easily push kids around (or older siblings). It's so much more fun than a stroller.
  6. Big Red Wagon  There are many variations of wagons available, and I couldn't find our exact one on Amazon. But it's big and holds a few kids. We've had it for years and the kids love it. We used it to make a Mystery Machine for Halloween this year, and in general it has had lots and lots of use since we've had it. The big kids like to roll themselves down the driveway into the street with it (we live on a court with pretty much nil traffic), the little kids like to pile in with blankets and toys and go around the neighborhood in it.
I'm sure I'll think of a few more to add to this list. We have other favorites around here too, but these are the ones we've had and loved for the longest. Do you have any others that you think should be included?
